The Common Core State Standards are a new set of expectations designed to ensure all students achieve college and career readiness. Forty-six states have adopted and are implementing the Common Core.
Created by America Achieves and now managed by TNTP, the Common Core Video Library features resources that help educators understand the key shifts that Common Core brings to classroom pedagogy. 1. Searching on this site
Can I see a list of everything on this site?
Yes! First open the search page using the black Search link at the top of your dashboard page or the top of any lesson module.
Next choose from Lessons which will search for and show you the complete video lesson modules, or Resources which will search for the individual resources including the videos, as well as all site documents including Word, PowerPoint, PDF and others.
Click on the purple Search button. All available lessons will be shown in a list below the search box.
- Lessons search will show you the list of complete video lesson modules, which include analysis and shift videos, lesson plans and other resources related to the lesson.
- Resources search will show you all individual resources on this site (including the videos, Word, PowerPoint, PDF and other documents).
Click on any detail of the lesson in the list to view that module. Click on the download link next to each resource to download it.
How do I use the basic search box?
First open the search page using the black Search link at the top of your dashboard page or the top of any lesson module.
Next choose from Lessons which will search for and show you the complete video lesson modules, or Resources which will search the for individual resources including the videos, as well as all site documents including Word, PowerPoint, PDF and others.
Type a word into the search box. For example if you are looking for a lesson led by David Liben, type Liben into the search box then hit the purple Search button.
The results will appear below the search section. Click on any part of the result to go to the lesson module.
Using Advanced Search for lessons and resources.
First choose Lessons or Resources:
Advanced search for lessons lets you filter for specific elements of lessons. You can use any one of these steps on its own or any combination of steps 1, 2, 3a and 3b to find lessons. Click the purple search button to show a list.
Step 1: Choose the domain – either ELA/Literacy or Mathematics. When you choose, the subjects that this site has lessons available for will appear in step 3a.
Step 2: Choose a grade level (or levels). When you choose a grade level it will reduce the list of available subjects in step 3a to match the lessons that are available on this site. 3a is optional – you can leave all or chose one subject.
Step 3b: This step allows you to see in the search results lessons that feature a particular Common Core Shift. When you select one of the shifts in 3b, the search results will tell you the number of times it occurs in each lesson. For the selection made above – ELA/Literacy, all grades, History, Evidence from text – 2 History lessons are returned. The search results are shown below the advanced search section.
You can see how often the selected shift will be featured in each lesson.
The process for searching for resources is similar except that step 3b allows you to choose the type of resource you want.
2. Sorting the search results
Search results are sortable. Click on the heading of the column (i.e. Lesson Name, Subject, Domain, Grade) to sort the results by that column.
The blue label tells you what you are searching on, and the category can be sorted ascending or descending by using the directional arrows.

What are the Common Core State Standards?
The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.

What are the Key Shifts?
The shifts are the major changes in instruction that happen with implementation of the Common Core State Standards. Read more about the key shifts or watch the ELA/Literacy shifts and the Math shifts videos accessible from the home page.
For ELA/Literacy the key shifts are:
- Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational texts
- Reading and writing grounded in evidence from text
- Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary
For Mathematics they are:
- Focus strongly where the Standards focus
- Coherence: think across grades, and link to major topics within grades
- Rigor. In major topics pursue with equal intensity: conceptual understanding; procedural skill and fluency; and application
Are all of these shifts shown on this website?
Not every shift can be shown in a classroom teaching video as some of these reflect the thought and decisions made before the teacher arrives in the classroom. On this website you will find video of teachers demonstrating and talking about:

EQuIP (Educators Evaluating the Quality of Instructional Products) is designed to identify high-quality materials aligned to the Common Core State Standards.
The objectives are two-fold:
- Increase the supply of high quality lessons and units aligned to the CSSS that are available to elementary, middle, and high school teachers; and
- Build the capacity of educators to evaluate and improve the quality of instructional materials for use in their classrooms and schools.
The EQuIP rubrics are designed to evaluate:
- Lessons that include instructional activities and assessments aligned to the CCSS that may extend over a few class periods or days
- Units that include integrated and focused lessons aligned to the CCSS that extend over a longer period of time
- The rubrics do not require a specific template for lesson or unit design
